May was an important month for TLC, not only because of our 20th Anniversary Banquet, but also because of the multiple Sexual Integrity presentations that we shared with St. Elizabeth's Catholic High School in Markham. We did four presentations, of which three were to more than one class. We were pleased to be able to share with approximately 150 students.
When it comes to our Sexual Integrity presentations, we try to be as frank and sincere with the students as possible. While it is impossible to reach every one, it is obvious to us that our use of statistics, graphics and friendly discussion engages many students and compels them to consider their sexuality and their future in ways they never had before.
At the end of each presentation, we ask students and teachers to fill in evaluation forms. It is important for us to gauge the response and perspective of the students so that we can ensure that our presentation is accurately geared towards their needs and questions.
After our visit to St. Elizabeth's in May, we looked through many responses. Some were vague, some were disinterested but most were very positive and a few truly stood out. One student said when asked what he/she liked,
"I thought the presentation was very informative and eye opening. It helped me to be more aware of the risks and consequences of sexual choices. Having this information in empowering."
When we see responses like this, we truly feel that we are engaging with students and touching upon a subject that is a fundamental part of their future and the person they will become.
When we talk with the students, we simply ask them to think about their future and the resolutions they want to make about their sexual choices. We emphasize that in order to protect their dignity and their physical and emotional well being, they should protect their sexual integrity by making informed decisions and striving to commit to their resolutions.
Whether we reach one student or 100 through this ministry, it is obvious that our Sexual Integrity Presentations can make a huge difference in the choices and future of many young people. Please continue to pray for the work we do and the students and teachers we present to. If you know of a school or youth group that you feel TLC should visit, please contact us at the Centre.
